| Reusable nappy advice is freely given and personal to you. If you would like advice at any time while reading this page, please phone or e-mail (christine@plushpants.co.uk) and simply ask! You can get advice on reusable nappies you already have, as well as those you might be thinking of buying!
Just a brief word about the colour of our washable nappies. Wherever possible, the reusable nappies I sell are made of unbleached cotton. This means they come in the natural, rich creamy colour of cotton straight from the loom. All cotton starts out this colour, and then some is bleached white. The reason I sell unbleached cotton is that cotton is a very intensive crop to farm - it requires a lot of pesticides and fertilisers, and is usually farmed non-organically. Buying unbleached cotton means you have avoided an additional layer of chemical processing, and of attendant chemical waste and pollution. All my unbleached reusable nappies have eventually washed to white, which means that if you buy unbleached nappies you will get white nappies, usually within a dozen washes! Incidentally, if you want to keep your reusable nappies that glorious, creamy, unbleached colour then use a deep green laundry detergent - one that contains no optical brighteners.
Another factor to consider is where the washable nappy is made. Most nappy fabric is grown and manufactured abroad, however by choosing a UK nappy brand, you will inevitably reduce the amount of "nappy miles" that have been incurred in the washable nappy making process. At Plush Pants Cloth Nappies you can find a wide range of UK manufactured reusable nappies by Tots Bots, Nature Babies, Ella's House and Easy Peasy Nappies.
You will notice that many of the reusable nappies' descriptions contain a weight in grammes. Basically, the heavier the cloth nappy, the more absorbent it will be as all the absorbency in a cloth nappy comes from the fabric it's made from! Where washable nappies are sold with a booster, I have indicated whether the weight includes the booster, or not. The actual weight of real cloth nappies sold to you may vary slightly according to manufacturing batches, different scales etc. These weights are intended as a guide, only.
