| The TotsBots Redrap is an amazing thing: made from 100% polyester fleece (like most fleece jumpers!) this has no additional lamination or treatment to inhibit their breathability. So, how are they waterproof? Simply by a process of evaporation, which also serves to keep the temperature inside the nappy system lovely and cool.
It has to be said, that fleece wraps don't work for every baby and so if your baby is over a year old, it's probably worth trying just one before you pile in and order a complete set. The reason for this is that, since there is no lamination, older babies who are weeing in a stronger, more concentrated jet, can wee straight through the fleece. This usually happens with boys, whose weeing habits are, shall we say, more geographically precise; and is usually limited to babies of over a year old since by then the bladder is larger and there is a degree of sphincter control. However, nappies aren't rocket science, and nothing is set in stone: fleece wraps can work perfectly well on two year old boys; and not at all on 18 month girls - it has been known, and is very much a suck-it-and-see exercise. What is sure is that if you have a very young or not-yet-born baby, you'll be fine!
So, here is the Redrap, from the TotsBots stable. It's made of a beautifully dense red polyester fleece (rainbow coloured wrap also available, listed separately below), with two layers in the gusset which means it avoids the bulk you find in most fleece wraps, and manages to perform extremely well on holding in wetness and preventing leaks. It fastens with aplix, and has crossover tabs at the waist, which make it a very adjustable wrap. It's also beautifully generously cut, and so will have no trouble fitting over bulky night nappies.
Another wonderful feature of this wrap is that the small size is specially designed to be used on newborns, and you'll find that this with simply a booster inside it is all you need to nappy your very new baby. I would expect this system to be sufficient for up to six weeks - and possibly longer - before you need to introduce a full, proper nappy. Even then, this wrap will cover your nappy, so it's a real winner!
And finally, the real beauty of fleece wraps is their ability to take any kind of laundry abuse! You can wash them at any temperature, tumble dry them at any temperature, hang them on a radiator - do what you like with them! In fact, if you find that your brand new fleece wrap is allowing a small amount of water to pass through, I would always recommend washing on a really hot wash, and tumble drying on the hottest setting, which usually solves the problem!
